This story is on behalf of my mother, Betty Hinton Worthy, who married my father, alumnus and Hall of Famer Arthur Lee Worthy:
“My connection to North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University began in 1968, when my late husband, Arthur Lee Worthy, Class of ‘58, proposed to me as we sat on the wooden bleachers near the football field’s end zone in Memorial Stadium. At the time, I thought that would be my most memorable moment at the university. Little did I know that a visit to campus would begin 58 years of surprises, joy, pain, and changes — experiences that would become a lifetime of memories. Our daughter, Robin, began attending games and homecoming celebrations when she was 4, thus making the Greatest Homecoming On Earth a family affair.
“Our second most memorable homecoming event came full circle in 1992, when Robin became a student at A&T. As we watched our Aggie daughter and her friends walk along the football field’s sideline, my husband’s eyes filled with tears. He was so proud.
“My most memorable homecoming was in 2002, during what would be my husband’s final visit to the school he loved so much. Although Art was ill, he chose to walk across the parking lot to our seats. I did not know it would be the last time he would sit beside me in Row 8, Section W. As we left that homecoming celebration that afternoon, he turned and looked back smiling. I am grateful I did not interrupt his private moment which I believe held memories of more than 50 years of loyalty to the Blue and Gold he cherished.
“I will sit in Section W as I attend my 58th homecoming this year with my daughter, her husband and their Aggie son this year. The legacy continues.”
